For $35 a month this money will go to local residents as wages and materials to build houses to replace the ones lost in the earthquake. I have not contributed to big relief efforts in the past because I felt like my small contribution wouldn't make a difference. I like the idea that by myself I can fund the cost of an entire house that will help one specific family get out of the tents and into their own home. It makes it personal. Here's the link that tells about the program:
I went to our cafeteria to get my morning latte, and I put all my change into the tip jar. In the past I haven't tipped because I felt like the price of a latte was so high already. What I noticed when I put the change in the jar, was the look on the cashier's face. It was more than the little bit of money, it was like an extra thank you to her for her effort in making the drink. It felt good!Jeaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09355748587849112639noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6302407612057595061.post-7922051596102555982011-01-26T12:10:00.000-08:002011-01-26T12:20:50.229-08:00Day 7 - Listening over dinnerMy son had a bad hockey game today. After winning 6 - 1 last night, they lost 7 - 9 to the same team. He walked in the door and the first thing out of his mouth was "I don't want to talk about it". My gift to him was not to push. I took him to his favorite restaurant (Olive Garden). By the end of the meal he was feeling better and said what he needed to say. I just listened!Jeaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09355748587849112639noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6302407612057595061.post-55291251749492942152011-01-22T23:43:00.000-08:002011-01-22T23:43:17.069-08:00Day 6 - Parking MoneyMy gift today was to my ex-husband. We have been apart for many years, but still have trouble getting along. The one thing we have in common is our kids and my son had a hockey game tonight, so I called him to see if he wanted to ride together to the game. We did, and when we got there I paid $3 for the parking meter. After the game we met my son at a restaurant for drinks to talk about the game. My husband and I got along the whole night, and we had a great time with our son afterwards. Now that I think about it, it was a gift for my son as well to have both of his parents at the same time focused on him instead of arguing with each other!Jeaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09355748587849112639noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6302407612057595061.post-32720383282719097512011-01-22T02:11:00.000-08:002011-01-22T02:11:01.787-08:00Day 5 - A BookToday I was wondering about the things I gave and whether they really met the spirit of the challenge. I let two people merge in traffic, and I let two ladies cross the street. But I decided I always do that, so maybe it doesn't really count. I also hosted a 15 year anniversary lunch for one of my team members, but I decided that was expected of me, so it didn't count either. So, here's what I finally did. When I was done reading the book 29 gifts, I listed it on Amazon for sale. Well, the book sold today and I just finished the last few pages so I can mail it tomorrow. That's when I got a great idea...I refunded the buyer's money and I will mail the book as my real gift for the day! We talked while we ate our goodies and he told me about a new puppy he was planning to buy. I learned that he has an old dog that he is afraid won't be with him much longer, and he thinks having a new puppy will make the transition easier. Sometime in the future, I'll understand what he is going through.Jeaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09355748587849112639noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6302407612057595061.post-40412846055096089062011-01-19T23:10:00.000-08:002011-01-19T23:10:15.378-08:00Day 3 - AppreciationEvery morning I stop at Starbucks for my morning latte on the way to work. This morning I was thinking about what my gift for the day might be. At the counter I noticed they had new gift cards and there was one that said simply THANK YOU. I bought one preloaded with $5 and knew I would find someone at work to give it to. Sure enough, I had a meeting with one of my team members and took a moment to thank him for his positive attitude and all that he does for others at work each day. He was pleasantly surprised and it made me feel good to surprise him with an unexpected gift.Jeaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09355748587849112639noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6302407612057595061.post-69414337203783922772011-01-18T20:33:00.000-08:002011-01-18T20:33:45.849-08:0029 Gifts - Day 2 - Remembering someone specialMy aunt has been an important part of my life as long as I can remember. She never had kids of her own, so she always treated me and my kids as if we were her own. When I was little, her house was my favorite because the cookie jar was always full of homemade cookies. My favorite were the peanut butter blossums with the big hershey's kiss in the middle! When I was in high school she let me clean her house to earn money for a trip I wanted to take. When I got my first job and moved into my own apartment I couldn't afford clothes, so she learned how to sew and made me everything I needed to wear for work. She has celebrated every holiday, birthday, and Christmas with us my whole life. She is now 90 years old, and I don't talk to her often enough. I get busy with work and kids and my own interests and take it for granted that she will always be around. My gift today was to call her. In the middle of the day, in the middle of work, just to take a moment and call her and make plans to go visit her this weekend. Jeaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09355748587849112639noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6302407612057595061.post-56669193043352248032011-01-17T21:32:00.000-08:002011-01-17T23:17:43.461-08:0029 Gifts - How a Month of Giving Can Change Your LifeAfter taking a break from making aprons, I've come back to my blog to take the 29 Gifts Challenge. I've been giving gifts informally for awhile now, and then I found Cami Walker's book, 29 Gifts, How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life. So today I'll officially start and write a post about each gift.

Day 1 - I have a new boss at work and to be honest, I don't like him very much. He's a nice enough guy, but there is just something about him that rubs me the wrong way. So this morning I decided that my gift for the day is to try really hard to see things from his perspective. He came into my office to talk, and instead of being stubborn and tuning him out, I gave him my undivided attention and LISTENED to him. What I realized is that he has a boss, too, who is giving him tasks to accomplish, and he needs my help to be successful. My gift of listening may be the first step in being happier at work!Jeaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09355748587849112639noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6302407612057595061.post-4926921910210611632009-04-19T10:00:00.000-07:002009-04-19T10:19:49.609-07:00Fiesta Apron Swap!

Wanted to share pictures of the fun aprons that were exchanged for the Fiesta Swap hosted by Yarni Gras.

First one is the cute apron sent to me by Sherry! I just sent off my St. Patrick's Day apron to my swap partner. Can't wait for her to see it! Now it's time to start working on my next creation for the Spring Color Apron Swap that I found on Swap Bot.

I've also signed up for the Fiesta Hot Mama Swap and the Tea for Two Sassy Apron Swap. I must be out of my mind! The apron bug has really bitten me! All I think about is which pattern should I try next... what fabric should I buy... what kind of goodies shall I send...

Is this normal? Will it wear off? Well, we shall see! Until then I am lost in a beautiful obsession!Jeaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09355748587849112639noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6302407612057595061.post-42812605306814806892009-02-23T21:49:00.000-08:002009-02-23T21:53:04.004-08:00Pay It Forward UpdateI am excited that Desiree has signed up to be my first Pay It Forward participant! She was my swap partner for the Sassy/Flirty Apron swap and sent me a wonderful apron and goody package. I am excited that now I get to surprise her with something nice sometime in the next 365 days. I still have two spots left... any takers?Jeaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09355748587849112639noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6302407612057595061.post-38041425138087980112009-02-18T20:32:00.000-08:002009-02-27T23:14:38.268-08:00My Valentine Swap Apron Came!

I was so excited when I came home tonight to find that my apron from the SSEN swap had arrived. Inside the box were many wrapped presents that were so fun to open. I can tell that Desiree, my swap partner. put a lot of thought and care into making and picking out all the fabulous gifts just for me!

My gift box included the following surprises:
A heart tin filled with goodies -- candy hearts, a pen with hearts, and heart shaped buttons (I love buttons).
A box of yummy Elmer's chocolates from New Orleans, which my excited kids promptly helped me eat!
Other goodies included heart stickers, a cute notepad with a chocolate covered strawberry, a pen with a bright red Poppy flower on top, and Pink Peony body butter! (I see a theme here, flowers and candy, just perfect for Valentine's Day)

But wait...it get's better!
Desiree loves to crochet and she made the cutest set of red and white potholders. The pattern is double thickness so I'm sure not to burn my hands!
She also made an adorable pincushion in the shape of a cupcake (complete with pins) I just started sewing and was just thinking the other day about how I wanted a cute pincusion. This one is so fun!
My favorite crocheted treasure is the sweetest white (with red trim) mini-dress. It is so delicate and absolutely perfect. I don't know how to crochet, so all these things are very special to me.

And last, but certainly not least is the very girly apron that Desiree made. She says it it her first one ever made and it turned out very cute! It is reversible (white with red and red with white) with contrasting pockets and an eyelet ruffle. It is exactly what I was hoping for!

Thank you Desiree for a wonderful swap package!Jeaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09355748587849112639noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6302407612057595061.post-44197801499947115112009-02-14T22:26:00.000-08:002009-02-14T22:35:38.683-08:00Red Velvet Cupcakes for Valentines Day

I am on a search for the best Red Velvet cupcake recipe, so my daughter and I tried one out for Valentine's Day.
